VFW Post 9242 is pleased to announce the 2026–2027 Patriot’s Pen competition, an annual opportunity for students in grades 6 through 8 to share their thoughts about America, citizenship, and the lessons learned from our nation’s veterans.
This year’s Patriot’s Pen theme is:
“What a Veteran Taught Me About America”
The competition is open to students in grades 6–8 who are enrolled by the October 31, 2026 deadline. Students are asked to submit a 300–400 word written essay addressing the competition theme.
The Patriot’s Pen program provides young people with an opportunity to reflect on the experiences and sacrifices of America’s veterans while developing their writing and communication skills.
National Prize: $5,000
The national prize is currently $5,000, providing an exciting opportunity for students whose essays advance through the competition.
Eligibility
Students must be lawful U.S. permanent residents or have applied for permanent residence, for which the application has not been denied, and intend to become a U.S. citizen at the earliest opportunity.

VFW Post 9242 encourages parents, teachers, school administrators, and community members to share this opportunity with eligible students. Patriot’s Pen gives young people an opportunity to put their thoughts into words while learning more about the experiences and perspectives of those who have served our country.
