Jim Ostdick’s walking journey that began in Delaware months ago has brought him to within 200 miles of the California border, in Austin, Nevada.
He reported to BenitoLink on Friday that the trek through Nevada “has been tough — long, dry valleys separated by mountain range after mountain range. But it won’t be long before I’m in Carson City, where I will trade in my jogging stroller for my backpack and set out for the Tahoe Rim Trail. Water!”
Ostdick’s journey is designed to raise awareness for the R.E.A.C.H. Foundation, which is promoting a trail system to connect San Benito County to America and vice versa.Â
Some of Ostdick’s most recent observations from his trek include:
1. The air is sweet and clean at 7,500 feet.
2. You can find petroglyphs in the desert.
3. Home for tonight is a humble room in Austin.
4. Last night it was a secluded campsite.
5. They don’t call US 50 the Loneliest Road in America for nothing – the “Devil’s Gate” near Eureka.
On Friday, Ostdick reported that on that day he walked 23 miles, spotted two antelopes, one coyote and six wild horses, scaled two summits, encountered one “lunatic too-close-for-comfort driver” and drank 1.5 gallons of water.
