San Benito County adventurer Jim Ostdick will spend Independence Day in Ogallala, Nebraska, 30 miles from the Colorado border as he continues his cross-country walking journey to raise awareness about and funds for the R.E.A.C.H. Foundation.

“As nice as the people of this state have been, I am more than ready for a change of scenery and the new challenge of crossing the Continental Divide,” Ostdick told BenitoLink by email. “I finally feel like I am making some westward progress.”

Ostdick, a retired high school science teacher who lives in San Juan Bautista, started his trip on the coast of Delaware and plans to walk across the country back to San Benito County.

He said he is closing in on the 1,700 mile-mark on his journey, following the Platte River toward its source in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

“Happy Independence Day to everyone in San Benito County,” he said.
