Jim Ostdick, who is walking across the country to raise awareness about … reported to BenitoLink that he hit his "biggest milestone thus far," crossing the Mississippi River into Davenport, Iowa and passing the 1,000-mile mark.

"The riverfront trails along the Mississippi are gorgeous," he said. "Despite a lot of rain and stormy nights, I am making good progress, right on schedule. Oh, and I'm on my third pair of shoes, in case anybody's counting."

Ostdick, a retired San Benito High School science teacher who lives in San Juan Bautista, is on a journey designed to build the R.E.A.C.H. endowment funds through the Community Foundation for San Benito County and raise awareness about the value of parks and trails.
