San Benito County adventurer Jim Ostdick passed the 900-mile mark on his walking journey across the United States. reaching the milestone this past weekend in rainy northwestern Indiana.
Ostdick reported to BenitoLink by email that he spend a "zero-day" (no miles hiked) Sunday with his brother, John, before crossing into Illinois on Monday.
"The people of Indiana were exceptionally friendly and helpful," said Ostdick, whose journey is designed to build the R.E.A.C.H. endowment funds through the Community Foundation for San Benito County and raise awareness about the value of parks and trails. "Mitch Barloga, who supervises the incredible rail trails system and the American Discovery Trail in northern Indiana, told me we are on the right track with R.E.A.C.H. He said from his experience that the most important thing we can do is to establish an endowment fund for the maintenance of our River Parkway and Regional Park."
Ostdick, whose journey will take him from the Delaware coast back to San Benito County, said, "I'm getting excited about hitting the 1,000-mile point this week and seeing what the Illinois trails are like."
