San Benito County adventurer and retired teacher Jim Ostdick has walked more than 1,250 miles in his cross-country journey from Delaware to San Benito County, all to raise awareness about the value of parks locally.

In his most recent report to BenitoLink, Ostdick said he was just west of Des Moines, Iowa, about 130 miles from crossing the Missouri River into Omaha, Neb.

“People in the Midwest continue to live up to their reputations as kind, straightforward, helpful citizens,” Ostdick said. “How they live with all these crazy, almost daily thunderstorms I’ll never know, but they sure are good folks.”

Ostdick, a retired San Benito High School science teacher who lives in San Juan Bautista, is on a journey designed to build the R.E.A.C.H. endowment funds through the Community Foundation for San Benito County and raise awareness about the value of parks and trails.
