The country-crossing journey that retired educator Jim Ostdick is making has brought him to Nebraska, where is is proceeding “at a snail’s pace, slowed by an awful heat wave.”

In an email to BenitoLink, Ostdick said he recently crossed the Missouri River into Omaha, where he spent a few days relaxing with his cousin and her grandchildren.

“The heat index is well over 100 degrees, so I am being very cautious,” said Ostdick, who is walking from Delaware to San Benito County over an eight-month period. Kearney, Nebraska, approximately 100 miles from Ostdick’s current location, marks the halfway point in his walk home.

“Man, do I ever miss the beach!” he said.

Ostdick, a retired San Benito High School science teacher who lives in San Juan Bautista, is on a journey designed to build the R.E.A.C.H. endowment funds through the Community Foundation for San Benito County and raise awareness about the value of parks and trails.
