Dozens of energetic children whose early career goals range from professional athlete and social media influencer to first responder participated in YMCA’s fourth annual Summer Day Camp Career Day on July 24.
Campers ranged from transitional kindergarten to eighth grade and had the opportunity to hear from and ask questions of law enforcement officers, attorneys, health care professionals and a BenitoLink reporter.
“Career Day is one of our favorite traditions because it gives our campers the opportunity to explore the many different career paths that are available to them,” YMCA Youth Development Director Samantha Diaz said. “We believe that exposing children to a wide variety of professions helps spark curiosity, inspire big dreams, and show them that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.”
The two-hour Career Day program took place at Rancho Santana School where about 180 children separated into groups rotated between stations every 30 minutes.
BenitoLink has participated in all of the day camp’s career days and this year partnered with registered dental hygienist Jennifer Frusetta, who manages San Benito County’s Local Oral Health Program.
Frusetta spoke about the impact of acid on teeth, what foods and drinks to avoid and how to properly brush.
In her demonstration, Frusetta provided campers with a litmus paper to test their drinks for acidity. One camper tested a drink which showed as acidic while another camper decided to test tap water.
Frusetta also provided photos of tooth decay. Some campers were disgusted—opting to either cover their face or turn their heads away—while others were eager to get a closer look.
This reporter spoke about the countless issues a journalist covers, from local athletes competing in amateur and professional leagues to elected officials and the daily news.
As expected, the campers were more eager to speak about professional athletes than politics. On the heels of the World Cup, campers asked whether BenitoLink covered soccer stars like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, rather than famous football and basketball players.
