Local kids ages four to 12 spent Sept. 15 at the San Benito County Free Library building cars, boats, pizza parlors and other creations. But rather than working with metal and wood, they used Lego pieces.
Library staff member Juan Perez oversees the local Lego Club, hosted on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 3 p.m. Perez, a Lego fan himself, said kids love to come and create things at the club, and that working with Legos “uses the left and right side of the brain.”
Ten-year-old Venessa Quintana spent the hour working on a boat. Her mother Alexis said Venessa enjoys building with Legos at home. Five-year-old Jaxson Sumaya simply said, “I like to build cars.”
Shannon Darnell attended the Sept. 15 club with her sons Anthony, 8, and David, 10. She said her boys love playing with Legos and that it is a great outlet for them.
“They can do it alone and feel accomplished,” Darnell said, adding that playing with Legos teaches tactile skill and creativity. Anthony was building a pizza parlor where at least one little customer rolled in on a skateboard. Both Anthony and David said they love Lego.
Perez said that along with the creativity that Lego inspires in kids, he also respects the company for its environmental sustainability.
“They are going to start rolling out environmentally conscious bricks,” Perez said. The company plans to replace all plastic bricks with ones made from plant-based material by 2030. Perez wondered if the bricks will be as durable as current pieces.
Hunter Wik, 8, was reluctant to speak to BenitoLink at first, but opened up as others talked and built their projects.
“You can build anything you want,” he said.
