Unfortunately, just the topic of law enforcement can create tension. Earlier this year BenitoLink, your local online news source, brought together two differing perspectives on the topic. Hollister resident Luis Burguillo wrote several opinion articles asking very direct and sometimes accusatory questions of the Hollister Police Department.
Instead of avoiding it (and staying in our separate silos), this was an opportunity to have an open discussion on a very tough topic, local policing and community relations.
Through BenitoLink Connects, producer Raul Ceja posed identical, carefully-drafted questions to both Hollister Police Department Chief David Westrick and Burguillo.
The result was an open discussion about subjects people are asking in communities all over America. After watching the video, Alex Amaral wrote, “The concerns addressed during the discussion are concerns that the entire nation is facing with police departments.”
The conversation resulted in uniformly positive responses to the productive discussion. In the comment section, Andy wrote, “Interesting and informative article. How about some more?”
Video production is expensive but with your help we can produce more. This video allowed two individuals with differing viewpoints to politely have their say. BenitoLink provided the platform and we all got to hear what they had to say. Westrick and Burguillo both agreed to sit down with BenitoLink for a follow-up conversation in the future.
Frequent content contributor and Hollister resident Marty Richman wrote, “Both sides were given a fair opportunity to make their points.” Our goal is to let our readers make their own judgments based on what they see and hear.
Through community support, BenitoLink can continue to host valuable discussions and we can address big questions together. When conflict arises, isn’t it better to be already talking? Nick Brown wrote, “BenitoLink has welcomed both sides of an issue to be addressed and is willing to facilitate an open dialogue. This is great! Keep it up!”
With your support, BenitoLink will continue encouraging discussion on sometimes uncomfortable but necessary topics. Take part Tuesday, May 16, in SB Gives, which is sponsored by the Community Foundation for San Benito County in partnership with BenitoLink and Mission Village Voice. Donate to Benitolink and let’s keep the conversation going.
