



The annual “Man & Woman of the Year Awards” sponsored by the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce, were presented Wednesday night. Titles are given to a man and woman as individuals, a Chamber of Commerce ambassador, and companies from five different business sectors. The winner is selected for each category by a group of previous winners.
Woman of the Year: Donna Holmes
Holmes is president and CEO of Holmes & Sons Trucking, Inc. She has given many volunteer hours to the community through the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary and the San Juan Youth Commission.
Man of the Year: Tony Schneider
Schneider has worked for Ace Hardware in Hollister for 18 years. He volunteers for the San Benito Stage Company, and has volunteered for San Juan Bautista State Park for many years.
The Ambassador of the Year: Ralphena “Ralphie” Hobbs
Hobbs was chosen by past ambassadors based on her active support and dedication to the Chamber of Commerce.
Retail Business of the Year: McKinnon Lumber
The Barrett family has owned McKinnon Lumber since 1972. John Barrett described the business as a “full-service lumber company.”
Hospitality Business of the Year: Paine’s Restaurant
Paine’s restaurant was purchased in 1980 by the Kouretas family. John Kouretas said in a recent BenitoLink article, “We’ve been able to continue by hiring service-minded employees, long-term planning and never losing sight of quality service at reasonable prices.”
Service Business of the Year: Redbeard Communications
Gregg and Marie Hoffman have had their own communications company for 25. They moved their business to Hollister in 1999. They have been recognized nationally for the award-winning designs and communications solutions. The Hoffmans have donated their time and skills to many successful projects throughout San Benito County.
Agriculture Business of the Year: Tonascia Farms
Tonascia Farms was established in 1983, by Joseph when he was 25 years old.The business manages more than 900 acres and at times as many as 40 employees. The company grows 32 varieties of vegetables, apricots and walnuts.
