Dunne Park is located in a historic residential neighborhood near downtown Hollister. This “diamond in the rough” has been a local favorite for many generations.
Currently, visitors would be concerned about the deplorable conditions of the public restrooms. This particular structure is need of a complete remodel with repairs to such basics as lighting, sinks, toilets and improvements to accommodate young children as well as individuals with physical disabilities.
This special downtown park had been neglected for many years. Mayor Ignacio Velasquez and other city officials have taken recent action to improve the park by resurfacing the tennis courts, upgrading playing conditions on the baseball fields,improving the children’s playground and expanding the nature garden. However, there is more to be done! The mayor and fellow city council members should continue their efforts in restoring Dunne Park.
It is imperative that the revitalization of Dunne Park also includes the clubhouse. This iconic structure that overlooks the entire park has served the community for years. Unfortunately, the Spanish Mission-style building has fallen into disrepair. To better serve the public, the clubhouse needs to be reconstructed. Â
Dunne Park is a valuable asset to the City of Hollister. An historic treasure, the park was a favorite place for World War II servicemen to enjoy with their girlfriends. Today, locals frequent the park, which offers many amenities,especially the open space with shade trees and a rose garden. I encourage Mayor Velasquez to continue his efforts to restore Dunne Park as a viable resource for the people of Hollister. Â
