Christmas and the holidays are traditionally the season of giving and not just personal gifts. Millions of Americans also give direct financial support and/or other donations to their favorite organizations and charities during this time of year.
There is no limit to the number and types of organizations at every level who do good work and whose primary funding comes from charitable donations – there is certainly something for everyone and multiple preferences for many.
Unfortunately, the public’s generosity also spurs those who are not so charitable and who prey on good will by pretending to be charities or support groups while, primarily, being interested in skimming those funds rather than serving the public.
Just because a mailer or person on the telephone uses the words police, firefighter, military, or kids does not mean that the organization is either a legitimate or even efficient, charity. Skimmers, scammers, and cheats have no qualms about lying so it’s up you to make sure you know where your donation is going. Remember, unscrupulous operators often go out of their way to make their solicitations sound or look real by copying well known charities or associations you trust or admire.
There are several reliable websites that examine and rate charities based on the records and how much of their funding actually goes into programs as opposed to making inflated payments to fundraisers, managers or overhead. Charity Navigator, Charity Watch, and the BBB (Better Business Bureau) Wise Giving Alliance are just three rating services.
Even after eliminating the unrated or poorly rated charities, you’ll be faced with tough choices.
Who you support is a personal matter, but if you are looking for a worthwhile area consider this, you can select one of the accredited, highly rated organizations that helps veterans who were severely injured or disabled while serving the country. After all, they gave their share already.
