Every March, more than 150 volunteers put the day aside from demanding agricultural jobs to help third-grade students from throughout San Benito County learn about where their food comes from.

The event, known as “Farm Day,” was held at the Bolado Park Event Center for the 23rd year in a row. Students got to watch a cow being milked and a horse being ridden. They had a chance to mob the volunteers with questions, some insightful and some lacking knowledge about food basics.

This year, approximately 860 students attended the event from all the schools in San Benito County. Teachers and family member chaperones attend the day-long learning sessions as well.

Many local farms and seed companies provided produce to sample or young plants to take home. This year, Seminis donated tomato transplants for children to plant them in pots made out of newspaper to take home and grow in their own gardens.
