Starting May 7, Californians will need a REAL ID to board domestic flights or enter secure federal facilities. The Federal REAL ID Act, passed in 2005 following the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations, is designed to improve security by making sure identification cards are verified more strictly.

A REAL ID issued by the state of California is marked with a golden bear and star located on the top right corner of the card. A California driver’s license or identification card with the “federal limits apply” marker will not be valid to board flights within the United States or access certain federal buildings.

Obtaining a REAL ID from the DMV requires an applicant to provide proof of identification, a Social Security Number, and proof of California residency.

Some acceptable forms of proof of identification are a U.S. passport or passport card, U.S. birth certificate, certificate of naturalization or citizenship, or a permanent resident card (green card). The document must include a full name (first, middle, and last) and date of birth. Important note: REAL ID applicants must present original or certified documents (no photocopies).

A Social Security Number can be verified with a Social Security card, W-2 form, or a pay stub with a full SSN.

Lastly, two different documents are required for proof of California residency. These can be a utility bill, mortgage statement, rental or lease agreement, or a bank statement. Important note: Both documents must show full first and last name with the same mailing address that will be on the REAL ID.

Once all required documents have been gathered, the online REAL ID application can be completed online, and the documents can be uploaded to the DMV website. When you’ve completed the application process, be sure to save your confirmation code. You will now need to visit a DMV office by scheduling an appointment. Be sure to bring your documents and application confirmation code.
