Luna Gallery on Oct. 24 held a sugar skull workshop to create Dia de Los Muertos altars celebrating loved ones.

Gallery board member Sandra Arretche said Luna has hosted the event for two years.

“We had people come to decorate and discuss them,” she said. “It represents our family members who have gone on before, our antepasados or ‘forefathers.’”

Gallery director Jennifer Colby said that Luna holds its Day Of The Dead exhibit to provide space for altars for the community.

She said they lead people in decorating the skulls and that they can put them on their own home altar.

Dia de los Muertos is all about color, she said, and the colors bring the altars to life because it’s not all about death but about the life that departed family members had lived.

Hollister resident Gregroy Degruy said he came to the workshop to help celebrate the Day of the Dead because he wanted to honor family members who had passed away.

“We had my sister, Eva, and my Uncle,” Degruy said. “And more people from our mom’s side. ‘

This was Degruy’s first time making a sugar skull, and he used pink, purple, green, red and mixed red and yellow to make orange. He said he thought the sugar skull came out well.

“It helps me by looking at it,” Degruy said. “and remembering the times that we had. It just helps me smile.”
