Starting this year, San Benito High School teachers are required to wear identification badges while on campus. Previously, the school-issued badges were optional.
Math teacher Michelle Nelson, said, “I love the idea of the teachers wearing the ID badges,” though she noted that it is a hassle to always bring it outside with her.
Marcus Kelly is an SBHS sophomore who said he really appreciates the effort of the new administration trying to keep everyone safe. “There have been a lot of crimes committed in schools, so it probably could happen here,” he said. “They should do whatever it takes to make this campus as safe as possible.”
History teacher Christopher Lasley said, “I have never been at a school that has this, but I like the idea of it.”
An SBHS campus security guard said she prefers that teachers and adults wear the badges on campus so she knows who is who. Wearing an ID badge lets the security team know which adults are on campus, and someone not wearing one will be approached and asked for identification. Campus guests who are not staff members are required to check in with the office and are given a sticker to wear for identification.
