Jim Ostdick, the San Benito County retired history teacher who is walking across the United States to raise awareness for the R.E.A.C.H. Foundation, reported to BenitoLink Friday that he was resting at the Border Inn on the Utah/Nevada border, “back at long last in the Pacific Time Zone.”

“What a good feeling!” Ostdick said. “Utah was a tough go, but I met the greatest people and I enjoyed every single day. But now I am ready to experience Nevada’s ‘Loneliest Highway in America,’ US 50 between here and Carson City. I will cross at least 11 mountain ranges and the basins that separate them over the next few weeks. Then, of course, there’s Lake Tahoe! Wahoo!”

Ostdick, whose journey began on the Atlantic Coast in Delaware, said he is on his sixth pair of shoes and provided a list of other things he has learned during his journey:

  • I have learned to rest in the shade when I can find some.
  • There are lots of cowboys and cowgirls and rea,l live haybalers in western Utah.
  • This friendly alfalfa exporter from Delta helped me through an 89-mile stretch of desert with no services. What a life-saver!
  • I’ll be happy to head west from the border (Saturday).
