Jim Ostdick’s walking journey across the United States has brought him to Utah, just a couple states away from home on his westward trip to raise awareness and money for the R.E.A.C.H. Foundation, which is promoting a trail system that will connect the county to the rest of the country.

The retired high school science teacher, who is taking the American Discovery Trail from Delaware to San Benito County, reported to BenitoLink on Saturday, Aug. 6 that he would be in Duchesne, Utah on Sunday, closing in on 2,200 miles walked.

“The Uintah Basin has been a stark, hot, and harsh introduction to the Beehive State,” he said. “But people continue to be supportive of and interested in R.E.A.C.H .Across America.”

The town of Vernal “was the best stop so far in Utah,” Ostdick said. “They have a great natural mistory museum and lots of recreational opportunities. It’s close to the Green River for rafting and fishing. And the surrounding mountains are rich in fossils, especially dinosaur bones! Much of this area was covered by a vast inland sea as evidenced by coral fossils like the one (in the photo accompanying this story). Everywhere you go along the main drag through town you see fun dinosaur replicas. This place would be the ultimate third grade field trip destination.”

Ostdick lamented missing the Summer Olympics, particularly the men’s basketball team, and he added, “make sure Kerri Walsh/April Ross win Gold on the beach” in volleyball.
