Author, adventurer and retired high school teacher, Jim Ostdick, recently returned to San Benito County, completing the cross-country trek that began on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in Delaware and culminated in San Juan Bautista, recently took some time to reflect on how his walk has ended, but his message has not.

Here is what he said:

“My long walk from Cape Henlopen, Delaware to Limantour Beach at Point Reyes, California and home to San Juan Bautista is complete.

In all, I hiked 3,322 miles from the Atlantic to the Pacific shores and wore out seven pairs of Vasque trail runners. I passed through 13 states and met some of the kindest, most generous, and genuinely friendly people in the USA. I kept a daily journal of my experiences (with photos) on the REACH Across America web site at: http://reachacrossamerica.org/blog.

I am ecstatic to finish this journey on behalf of R.E.A.C.H. San Benito Foundation. Everywhere I went, I touted the beauty, tradition, and culture of our county. And I learned something from every town I visited about the importance of public recreational facilities to each community.

The R.E.A.C.H. Board of Directors is eager to move on to the next phase of our mission. To each of you who have pledged your support to contribute to the endowment fund for parks and trails in San Benito County, I thank you with all my heart.

To those of you who have possibly been waiting to see how I did, I challenge you to jump in and join the cause. Hey, I walked across a continent! Chip in a little sumpin sumpin!

Please be as generous as you can be and send in your pledge at your earliest convenience. Your gift will truly “keep on giving” as future generations of San Benito residents and visitors enjoy the recreational and economic benefits of our collective efforts.

All the best,
Jim Ostdick
