The community took advantage of free Slurpee Day at 7-Eleven in Hollister on July 11.

Every year since 2002, the convenience store has handed out free Slurpees on the 11th day of July, which is known as “Slurpee Day.” Located at 915 San Benito St., the 7-Eleven is the only chain convenience store in the county.

Joseph Avila, 36, and his son Joseph Avila Jr., 13, each snagged a free small Slurpee in the chili mango flavor.

“Today we came to 7-Eleven to get free Slurpees,” Avila said. “It’s a hot day, we’re trying to stay cool.”

In Hollister, temperatures reached 98 degrees.

Inside the store, people patiently waited in line for their turn at the Slurpee machine. Adults, teenagers, and children with their parents filled their small cups with their favorite flavors—including blue raspberry, cherry, and piña colada.
