Peter Pan is a story that many of us never outgrow. For an afternoon or evening of uplifting entertainment, residents can see San Benito Stage Company’s version of the popular story over the next couple weeks.

The performances opened May 3 and continue on weekends through May 18 at the Veterans’ Memorial Building, 649 San Benito Street, Hollister. During a pre-performance run-through for local students, BenitoLink asked a few of the performers about their favorite part of being involved in community theater.

Kylie Drew, who is in the pirate role, said she was looking forward to opening night.

Director Dena Gregory said that theater “creates community and brings kids and adults together.”

Feeling pre-show jitters, both Rodney Puffer (Peter Pan) and Lynx Lopez (John) said they were looking forward to closing night.

Vocal director Ron Firstbrook said that it is good to be reminded how much fun local performing arts can be. “I want everyone to come to the show,” he said. “There is a lot of talent in our community.”

During BenitoLink’s 2023 Community Vision Listening Sessions, attendees interested in the arts repeatedly mentioned the need for a performing arts center in Hollister. Residents from Aromas, San Juan Bautista and Hollister said they felt the county should do more to recognize and celebrate the arts. Several suggested more arts events could help bring local creativity into focus.

When asked if there is a need for a permanent facility, Gregory was emphatic that a performing arts center would help groups like the San Benito Stage Company. She said, “There needs to be a performing arts center right now. We’re always scrambling for available venues.”
